The Brief

Oaklands House is a development of 606 apartments in seven blocks, primarily for housing association tenants. The tallest block had 26 floors, and the smallest six. We installed kitchens, decking on every curved balcony and fitted out the lobby/concierge area. Finishes were practical and hardwearing, although in the lobby we installed ribba panelling and metal post boxes in deep colours, as well as oak benches.

The Approach

This project was for the installation of door sets and kitchens and the supply and the instal of ironmongery, skirtings, composite decking and bespoke joinery.

Perhaps our biggest challenge in this job was dealing with materials shortages as the initial waves of the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the UK. Quarantine and isolation requirements heavily impacted the availability of quality joiners and fitters, while materials were stranded in other countries as international travel was restricted. During the 28 months of the job, we transitioned from supplying labour only to labour and some materials. We also quickly responded to carpentry challenges, such as cutting the individual decking timbers to fit non-uniform spaces.
