The Brief

The construction of a 38-storey apartment block 251 Elephant & Castle,  south London was a new challenge for MJ Hillson. We were brought in to manage a European labour force rather than undertake the carpentry ourselves or supply the materials. The project (for contractor Laing O’Rourke) was a mix of studios, larger flats and penthouses. We were ultimately responsible for all the internal and communal-area doors.

The Approach

Of course, deliveries are a challenge in any part of London, and we needed to manage the logistics of these carefully. But the project at 251 Elephant & Castle had an extra dimension, requested by the client. The doors all came from a Spanish company and the workforce fitting them came from Portugal. Language was obviously the largest challenge we faced, so we arranged a translator and worked with him on daily briefings to ensure the whole team knew what was required.
